U.S. Ambassador Confronts Iran at U.N. Security Council

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz addressed the U.N. Security Council, criticizing Iran after recent claims made by its representative. Waltz asserted that Tehran would not silence the Council, following allegations from the Islamic Republic that members spread false information about its attacks on neighboring Gulf states.

During the meeting, Waltz reminded Iranian diplomat Amir Saeid Iravani of the venue’s significance. Waltz said, ‘This is the United States of America. This is the United Nations Security Council. You will not silence this body.’

The session was convened following drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, attributed to Iran, after new U.S. airstrikes against Iranian targets.

Offering a counterpoint, Iravani argued the meeting was unwarranted and accused the U.S. and others of deceit. He described statements from Waltz and others as disinformation meant to justify ‘unlawful acts of aggression’ by the U.S. He also dismissed accusations from other council members and Bahrain’s representative as baseless.

Providing visual evidence, Waltz showed images depicting damage from the Iranian attacks, including a residence destroyed in Bahrain and a hotel hit by a drone. He questioned if the council should dismiss these accounts as lies, emphasizing the victims’ suffering.

Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, stated that since February 28, the country faced 808 attacks consisting of 203 ballistic missiles and 605 drones. He noted these strikes targeted civilians, infrastructure, and residential zones, resulting in three deaths and 465 injuries, countering Iran’s claim that military objectives were the sole targets.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with mutual accusations of ceasefire violations. In late June, former President Donald Trump declared that U.S. forces targeted Iranian missile and drone sites after accusing Iran of breaking the ceasefire agreement.

The conflict began when an Iranian drone hit a merchant ship off Oman, prompting a U.S. military response. Trump warned of potential further military action if provocations continue, stating that such measures could result in serious consequences for Iran.
