Trump’s Endorsed Candidates Face Mixed Results in Georgia Primaries

1 week ago 0

President Trump’s influence was tested in Georgia’s Republican primary runoffs. His endorsed candidate for Senate won, but his pick for governor lost.

Georgia Results

Representative Mike Collins, endorsed by Trump just recently, triumphed over Derek Dooley in the Senate race. This sets him up to face Senator Jon Ossoff, the sole Democrat running for re-election in Georgia, in the general election. In contrast, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, another Trump ally, was defeated by Rick Jackson, a wealthy businessman in the governor’s race.

Other Key Outcomes

Alabama Senate

Representative Barry Moore, backed by Trump, faces Jared Hudson, a retired Navy SEAL, in a competitive contest.

Oklahoma Governor and Senate

Trump endorsed Mike Mazzei for governor, where several Republicans are vying for the nomination. Kevin Hern, with Trump’s support, won the Republican nomination for Senate in Oklahoma.

Washington Mayor

The mayoral primary in Washington, D.C. features prominent Democrats, Kenyan McDuffie and Janeese Lewis George. The election uses ranked-choice voting, postponing definitive results.

Mike Collins’s Campaign

In his victory speech, Collins targeted incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff over issues like immigration and crime. He labeled Ossoff as influenced by external political forces. Collins united with Gov. Brian Kemp and Derek Dooley, focusing on securing the Republican win in the upcoming election.

Georgia Governor’s Race

Rick Jackson, a politically inexperienced billionaire, defeated Trump’s candidate for governor, gaining the nomination. Jackson highlighted his business acumen and personal story of humble beginnings as strengths.

The Political Landscape

Despite Republican dominance in Georgia, Democrats hold both Senate seats. Jackson’s financial resources and business background may provide an advantage, but he must also appeal beyond the Republican base.

Other State Races

Penny Brown Reynolds won the Democratic runoff for Georgia’s elections chief, while Tim Fleming secured the Republican nomination for the same post. In Alabama, Barry Moore and Jared Hudson are contending fiercely in the Senate runoff.
