Trump’s New Executive Order on AI Oversight
President Donald Trump signed a new executive order to oversee artificial intelligence development. The order aims to maintain America’s technological edge by evaluating national security risks associated with advanced AI systems before they are released publicly.
The initiative allows voluntary participation from AI developers. It outlines a framework for federal government assessment of AI’s national security risks, limited to a 30-day review period, shorter than anticipated by many in the industry.
Background and Reasons Behind the Order
Trump’s decision to sign this order came shortly after canceling a ceremony planned for its announcement. He was concerned about maintaining the nation’s technological lead over China and others. The order focuses on collaboration, encouraging participation from leading U.S.-based tech companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google.
The executive order was initially set for public signing in May but was delayed due to dissatisfaction with the early text. After revisions, Trump opted for a simple signing without ceremony.
Key Features of the Executive Order
The White House announced that the order creates a voluntary process for tech companies to share advanced cyber models. This aims to secure critical infrastructure and bolster government cyber defenses without overarching oversight of all new models.
“We are NOT conducting oversight of all new models, as that level would have chilling effects on free speech and innovation,” the administration clarified.
Juan Londoño from the Cato Institute acknowledged the order’s imperfections but appreciated the voluntary aspect. He voiced concerns about the NSA director’s role in choosing which AI models require scrutiny and which partners gain early access.
Industry and Government Perspectives
Anthropic, engaged in a legal dispute with the Trump administration, recently unveiled its Claude Mythos AI model that can identify cybersecurity vulnerabilities. In response, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and outgoing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened an urgent meeting with Wall Street CEOs over potential risks posed by Mythos.
Anthropic welcomed the executive order, considering it a significant step in reinforcing America’s AI leadership. Other industry leaders like OpenAI and Google shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for safety frameworks informed by technical expertise and stakeholder input.
Political Reactions
Democratic Senator Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, praised the order while criticizing the administration for dismantling prior AI safeguards set up by former President Joe Biden.
Trump’s actions prompted varying reactions within political and technological spheres about America’s approach to evolving AI capabilities.
