Trump Recommends Darline Graham Nordone for Senate

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he recommended Darline Graham Nordone for an interim U.S. Senate seat. He advised South Carolina’s Governor Henry McMaster to appoint her as a tribute to her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.

On Truth Social, Trump stated, “I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!”

This endorsement brought Nordone to the forefront as a potential candidate to fill the Senate vacancy left after Graham’s death at age 71. Governor McMaster holds the authority to appoint an interim senator but has not revealed his choice.

Lindsey Graham is survived by his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, who was seen as his closest family member. Graham, who never married nor had children, shared a strong bond with her.

They grew up in Central, South Carolina, where their parents, Millie and F.J. Graham, ran the Sanitary Cafe. The family’s life shifted dramatically when their mother died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1976, followed by their father’s death from a heart attack 15 months later. This left Graham, in his early 20s and a college student, to care for his teenage sister.

According to the Post and Courier, Graham joined the Air Force and adopted Nordone to ensure she received military benefits, becoming her legal guardian and guiding her into adulthood.

During Graham’s 2015 presidential campaign, Nordone stood by her brother at events. She shared with The New York Times how Graham acted as a parent figure after their parents’ deaths.

Nordone, a mother of two, has built a career helping individuals with disabilities find employment. She maintained a continuous presence in Graham’s political journey over the years.

Lindsey Graham’s Cause of Death

An initial examination suggested that an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease may have led to Senator Lindsey Graham’s passing, as reported by the Office of the Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia.

Findings are preliminary, and the death certificate remains pending as further toxicological and microscopic tests are conducted. Graham’s office initially described his passing as due to a “brief and sudden illness” and requested privacy for his family.

Lindsey Graham’s Personal Life

Lindsey Graham never married nor had children. In his 2015 memoir, he cited timing as the primary reason for this. He remarked, “I’ve never married. I guess I attribute that to timing.”

During Graham’s 2015 presidential bid, Nordone described how her brother delayed his personal life to care for her. She told The New York Times that “he was a young man taking on a young girl and teenager to raise,” hinting that his commitment might have influenced his decision not to marry.
