President Donald Trump heightened his criticism of Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on Wednesday. During his speech, Trump accused El-Sayed of dishonesty and asserted that Democrats are embracing communist ideologies.
El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary. The Associated Press called the race in his favor early Wednesday. He will face Republican Mike Rogers in the upcoming November election for the Senate seat currently held by retiring Sen. Gary Peters.
Speaking in Las Vegas, Trump targeted democratic socialist candidates, suggesting they promote communist ideas. He labeled communism as the single greatest threat to the United States’ history, surpassing events such as World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11.
“These people are dangerous,” Trump said. “Communism is the greatest threat to our country.”
The White House shared Trump’s remarks on social media, underscoring his stance against communism.
Trump dismissed communist policies as harmful to American citizens. He warned of the consequences, claiming they would result in poverty and chaos by the year’s end.
Trump cited Venezuela as a cautionary example of how he believes communist policies can devastate a nation, referencing the country’s decline from prosperity to severe hardship.
Singling out El-Sayed, Trump intensified his critique by questioning El-Sayed’s sincerity. This drew a strong audience reaction during the event.
El-Sayed’s win positions Democrats with a progressive nominee in a pivotal Senate race. Supported by political figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, El-Sayed has advocated for policies such as Medicare for All. He has tried to distance himself from the Democratic Socialists of America despite being linked to the movement by opponents.
Revisiting a common theme from his presidency, Trump reiterated his message of resistance to socialism, claiming Democrats seek a shift beyond socialism towards communism.
“Together we will defeat communism, socialism, and Marxism in America once and for all,” Trump concluded.
The White House and El-Sayed’s campaign did not offer immediate comments regarding the speech.
