As the 2026 midterm elections near, new poll data suggests that President Donald Trump’s political standing has declined notably since his second term began. According to Civiqs’ ongoing online poll of registered voters, national approval for Trump stands at 35%, while disapproval is at 59%, resulting in a net approval rating of negative 24.
State-Level and Demographic Trends
Trump remains underwater in key battleground states, including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In Republican-leaning states like Tennessee and Utah, the President is at even standing, while Indiana has dipped into negative territory. States such as Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Wyoming have seen significant drops in net approval.
Demographics reveal that Trump’s precarious support is reflected among younger voters, independents, and individuals with postgraduate education. Among those aged 18-34, a mere 22% approve of Trump’s performance, versus 70% who disapprove. Approval among independents stands at 29% compared to 62% disapproval. Higher education levels further accentuate declining support, with 23% of postgraduates approving versus 72% disapproving.
Deep Red and Blue States’ Approval
Trump’s strongest support is found in deeply Republican states. Wyoming leads with a net approval of +22, trailed by North Dakota and West Virginia, both at +15. Conversely, deeply Democratic states like Hawaii (-60), Vermont (-52), and Maryland (-51) show entrenched opposition.
Swing State Challenges
The battleground map remains especially challenging. Florida slipped from +9 net approval to -10. Nevada moved from even to -23. These shifts, alongside other states, reflect intensified partisan efforts as the midterm elections approach.
Historical Comparison
Compared to the 2018 midterm elections, Trump’s approval has weakened. Earlier Civiqs data indicated a 43% approval against 53% disapproval, yielding a net -10. The current net approval of minus 24 signifies a steeper decline.
Administration’s Stance
The White House has been dismissive of such poll variations, emphasizing Trump’s 2024 victory as a key indicator of public backing. Spokesperson Davis Ingle mentions ongoing efforts to bolster jobs, address inflation, and improve housing. Ingle states that Trump’s administration is committed to providing these results.
