President Donald Trump suggested he might headline his own rally in Washington, D.C., due to concerns around scheduled performers. He claimed these performers were experiencing what he called “the yips.” Trump proposed replacing these artists with a speech from himself, declaring himself as “the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump pointed out that the artists expected to perform at the event were facing anxiety about their performances. He indicated he might fill in, boasting that he draws larger audiences than Elvis Presley during his peak, without the aid of a guitar.
The remarks from Trump came after several artists withdrew from the concert series linked to the president’s Freedom 250 celebration. These withdrawals affected the event’s lineup significantly. Although organizers have stated that the festival is part of a national effort to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, there has been early controversy concerning which musicians will participate. Out of the originally featured performers, only three remain confirmed to perform.
Newsweek contacted Freedom 250 via email following these developments.
In addition to the festival, there will be a UFC event hosted by Trump at the White House on Flag Day, June 14, which is also his 80th birthday. This event will feature a 5,000-seat arena and an octagon-shaped cage set up on the South Lawn.
Trump’s Comments on Freedom 250
In his Truth Social post, Trump mentioned instructing his team to investigate the possibility of turning the event into an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” scheduled for the same time and place. Attendance would be restricted to individuals whom he describes as “Great Patriots.”
He expressed disdain for “so‑called ‘Artists’ that get paid far too much money, who aren’t happy,” preferring to be among “Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN.” Trump portrayed the rally as an initiative for national renewal. He claimed that two years ago the U.S. was stagnant, but now it is “the ‘HOTTEST’ Country anywhere in the World.” He labeled the possible rally as a “Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America.”
He further stated, “So, by copy of this TRUTH, I am ordering my Representatives to look at the feasibility of doing an AMERICA IS BACK Rally on Wednesday, Washington, D.C., same time, same location.”
Several acts, including Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, Martina McBride, Milli Vanilli, and the Commodores, withdrew from the lineup. They withdrew after realizing the event was organized by Freedom 250 and not the nonpolitical America250 commission.
Trump has often had disagreements with entertainers who choose not to perform at his events or distance themselves from his political image. Observers note that Trump’s rallies are crucial for energizing his base, often more so than conventional campaign activities.
Understanding Freedom 250
Freedom 250 is a public-private group established to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. Its agenda includes a grand 16-day festival on the National Mall dubbed the Great American State Fair. Entrance to the fair is free, and the group has marketed it as a key event in the nationwide America250 celebrations.
The organization describes the celebration as a World’s Fair-style event aimed at honoring U.S. history and engaging all Americans. The event features live entertainment, cultural displays, military exhibits, and activities involving all states and territories.
Though the organization promotes the fair as a nonpartisan celebration, reports suggest it has support from the Trump administration. This link has led to controversy as many artists listed on promotional materials were not aware of any political ties. Despite these challenges, with only three acts remaining, Freedom 250 continues to advertise the fair as a unifying national event with a mission to “uplift and unite America” during the 250th anniversary.
“Freedom 250 is focused on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans—welcoming all who share our goal of commemorating this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America,” a statement from Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner read, according to Newsweek.
