Kansas City Chiefs veteran tight end Travis Kelce, at 36, faces talks of retirement. Despite the speculation, Kelce has committed to playing at least one more season. In March, he signed a one-year contract worth $12 million to continue with the team for the 2026 season.
Kelce’s decision hinged significantly on his partnership with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Their bond was evident during training camp. Kelce praised Mahomes’ performance as he recovers from major knee injuries. “Everybody knows I love that guy,” Kelce shared with reporters. “He’s like a brother to me. I’m proud of how he overcame challenges from last year to now. We’re a month away from the first game, and he’s enjoying playing, performing at a high level, and not dwelling on the knee injury. He’s playing hard and leading us.”
Mahomes sustained an ACL and LCL tear during a match against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14 of the previous season. This injury cut his season short, and the Chiefs lost their next three games, resulting in a 6-11 record, the worst in the Mahomes era.
With Mahomes approaching 31, there was concern about his readiness for the new season’s start. However, coaches and teammates have been impressed with his recovery, reporting no signs of his former injury affecting his performance. Mahomes appears set for the season opener against the Denver Broncos on Monday, Sept. 14, at Arrowhead Stadium.
