A tragic accident occurred in Lahore, Pakistan, where a roof collapse at a tutoring center led to the deaths of at least 14 schoolchildren. The incident happened on Tuesday at a site under construction in the eastern part of the city. Authorities reported that eight other children sustained injuries and are receiving medical care.

Senior police official Faisal Kamran stated that the owner of the tutoring center and one other individual have been apprehended. Rescuers are actively searching the debris, concerned that more children may be trapped beneath the rubble.

“The building’s second floor roof, still unfinished, collapsed due to poor construction quality,” Kamran explained.

Pakistan often sees such accidents, where building codes are lax, and materials used in construction are below standard. In Karachi, a similar incident occurred less than a year ago, resulting in over two dozen fatalities.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with ambulances and rescue workers arriving quickly. Local residents also assisted, removing rubble with tools and bare hands to rescue trapped children. As bodies were recovered, families faced immense grief.

Relatives mourned openly, with distress visible outside hospitals and in the community where the tutoring center was located in a house. Most children who lost their lives lived nearby, and funeral prayers were planned for later in the day.

The community expressed outrage, demanding accountability from the tutoring center’s owner for utilizing an unsafe building. Many gathered to offer condolences, with residents like Zafar Iqbal visiting multiple grieving families.

Lahore, the capital of the populous Punjab province, has parents who frequently send children to private centers for additional education. The incident prompted responses from key officials. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif voiced sorrow and called for improved safety measures to avoid future tragedies.
