Tragic Death of Yemen’s ‘Spider-Man’ Highlights Risks of Free Climbing

An adventurer known for his daring feats, Al-Qaqa Ibn Antar, tragically died after falling into a volcanic crater in southern Yemen. Al-Qaqa, dubbed the ‘Spider-Man of Yemen,’ was free climbing at the Hardah Dam crater near Damt, a site he had scaled numerous times without safety gear.

On Friday, Antar, 30, attempted the climb, relying solely on his physical strength and experience. A short video circulating online shows him hanging from the crater wall, as he had done many times before. However, he abruptly lost his grip and fell 390 feet to the bottom. His untimely death prompted various reactions on social media, with many offering condolences. Some pointed out the inherent danger in his actions.

Supporters argued that Antar was motivated by the desire to escape poverty through social media fame. The Yemeni Civil Defense Authority announced his body was found after an arduous four-hour recovery operation from 65 feet below the surface of the crater’s lake. This volcanic lake is known for its sulfur-rich waters, with temperatures reaching up to 140 degrees. Rescuers faced hazardous conditions due to potent gases from underground vents.

The Civil Defense Authority appealed to the public to observe caution while visiting natural sites. It strongly advised against approaching crater edges and steep slopes, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety practices.

Free climbing, which involves scaling natural or man-made structures without protective gear, has gained global attention through social media. Prominent climbers like Alex Honnold have showcased their abilities, leading to increased interest in the sport. Honnold is renowned for his ascent of Taiwan’s Taipei 101 tower without ropes, broadcast live to audiences worldwide. Tragically, other climbers, such as Balin Miller who fell last summer while climbing Yosemite’s El Capitan, have also lost their lives in the pursuit.
