The Toronto Raptors made headlines by acquiring Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers. This trade, finalizing on June 30, marked a significant offseason move. Leonard, who led Toronto to its first NBA title in 2019, joined the Raptors once more. In return, the Clippers received Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks for 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.
However, the trade is currently on hold. The NBA is investigating Leonard’s $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a ‘green banking’ company now bankrupt. Wachtell Lipton, a law firm, has looked into whether the Clippers aided Leonard in bypassing the salary cap with this deal. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested $60 million into Aspiration, raising concerns about whether the endorsement was legitimate or a disguised payment.
Recent reports indicate the investigation has broadened. It now questions if the Clippers covered Leonard’s expenses without claims for reimbursement and whether he had a separate undisclosed endorsement deal.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressed the ongoing investigation issues, noting optimism for a resolution by summer. He emphasized the need for completion before the next season’s start. Silver admitted the lengthiness of the investigation, involving legal intricacies and witness cooperation, exceeded his expectations.
Silver pointed out that the trade delay results from the involved teams’ decisions. The NBA did not intervene directly but acknowledged that potential risks related to Leonard’s contract were already known before the trade proposal. Teams had engaged the league for clarity, ensuring no surprises should arise from the pending inquiry.
