California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer voiced support for transgender athletes participating in high school sports, emphasizing that exclusion could exacerbate mental health difficulties faced by many transgender youths. Speaking on the “I’ve Had It” podcast, Steyer stated, “I’m totally in favor of trans athletes in high school.” He highlighted the vulnerability and stress transgender kids endure, noting that nearly half attempt suicide. He questioned the rationale behind denying transgender students access to team sports.
Steyer reiterated these views during an interview with CBS Los Angeles, criticizing opponents’ actions as attempts to malign transgender individuals. He described this as a “right-wing attempt” to further marginalize vulnerable people, stating his empathy for those who feel rejected and emphasizing the serious implications of such social stigmas.
“This is not some huge epidemic,” Steyer said. “This is a right-wing attempt to victimize and villainize already vulnerable and desperate people.”
Steyer is one of several Democratic candidates seeking to keep control of the governorship as current Governor Gavin Newsom approaches the end of his term. Other Democratic contenders include former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, former California State Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa, former California State Controller Betty Yee, and California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.
The Democratic candidates largely align with Steyer on the issue. Porter emphasized the role of youth sports in character development, advocating for inclusivity. Becerra stressed the importance of respecting existing laws designed to protect various classes, including transgender students.
Mahan criticized using the issue as a “political lightning rod” and questioned the fairness of some situations involving transgender athletes. While recognizing potential issues in specific scenarios, he opposed using the topic to further political agendas or demonize differences.
Villaraigosa labeled the debate a “non-issue” while opposing discrimination generally. He expressed personal reservations about biological males who have undergone puberty competing in women’s sports. Yee called for identifying ways to ensure fairness and inclusivity, and Thurmond expressed unequivocal support for transgender athletes.
In contrast, Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco sought to repeal legislation that allows transgender participation in high school sports.
