Addressing Chicago Violence
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche expressed concern over the alarming violence in Chicago, highlighting that eight people were killed and many were injured over the weekend. He criticized Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for allegedly declining federal aid to address the city’s problems.
Blanche emphasized the importance of collaboration between local and federal agencies for reducing violence. He talked about successful crime reduction efforts in places like Washington, D.C., and Memphis.
Chico Library Shooting Incident
In a separate incident, a shooting occurred at a library in Northern California. Officials revealed that the gunman was influenced by the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. The suspect, Bradley Scott Sayer, aged 18, had no connections to either the library or the victims.
According to the Chico Police Department, Sayer inspected the building before retrieving a shotgun from his car. Upon returning to the Chico branch of the Butte County Library, he shot two people. The victims were identified as Jacob Hull, 46, and Robert Johnson, 74. An underage girl was also injured but received treatment at a hospital.
Police Response and Investigation
Multiple 911 calls were made, and officers responded within minutes. Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge highlighted the rapid police response as potentially lifesaving. Sayer was apprehended shortly after exiting the building.
Authorities conducted a search of Sayer’s vehicle, finding two additional firearms. Investigations are ongoing to determine how he acquired these weapons. At the time of the shooting, Sayer wore a T-shirt with the words “natural selection,” similar to one worn by a Columbine shooter.
Law enforcement officials, like FBI Special Agent Sid Patel, noted Sayer’s long-term obsession with the Columbine shootings, which he discussed on social media. Butte County District Attorney Michael Ramsey confirmed that Sayer’s arraignment is set for Thursday.
