Embracing Faith in Hollywood: A Unique Mission

Karen Covell, the founder of the Hollywood Prayer Network, has dedicated over 25 years to creating a bridge between Christianity and Hollywood. While many Christians criticize Hollywood, Covell has encouraged them to pray for the industry instead. Her organization has grown to include more than 170 chapters across 42 countries and recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala in Los Angeles.

The Vision Behind Hollywood Prayer Network

Covell started the faith-based organization in 2001 with a mission to support Hollywood’s storytellers through prayer, community, and resources. The Hollywood Prayer Network believes in guiding the next generation of actors, writers, and producers. They offer various support services like intercessory prayer, discipleship, networking events, and Bible studies.

“We have a beautiful community here,” Covell shared, emphasizing her commitment to supporting the town’s creative talents. Along with her husband, Jim Covell, she saw the need for believers in Hollywood to find guidance and fellowship as they navigated the industry.

Overcoming Challenges in the Entertainment Industry

Covell acknowledges the challenges in Hollywood, noting its competitive nature and the industry’s perception of Christianity. She explains, “I knew Hollywood didn’t like the church because we were really terrible to them; we boycotted, threw out our TVs, burned their books. But I believed if you pray for somebody, you can’t hate them.”

Despite the odds, Covell was determined to change perceptions and encourage both Hollywood and the church to appreciate each other’s value. Her efforts have led to prayers for famous individuals during their struggles and support for numerous groups in the industry.

Expanding Community and Support

The organization has grown to include multiple community groups for directors, dancers, writers, and others. Local chapters across the U.S. offer mentorship, networking, and worship opportunities. They also introduce innovative tools like an app that lists resources, chapters, and events worldwide.

Covell identifies isolation, discouragement, and fear as significant challenges facing artists. She believes community can combat these issues effectively.

“We have gatherings of people all over the city and the world who say it’s important to be storytellers,” Covell stated.

Finding Personal and Professional Synchrony

Covell attributes her success partly to her 42-year marriage, which she describes in her book about their relationship. Celebrating their supportive partnership, Covell emphasizes the power of shared faith and perseverance.

Recently, she devoted herself entirely to the Hollywood Prayer Network after stepping down from producing. Covell notes the organization’s slow but steady growth, built on steadfast dedication and community support.

Covell continues focusing on supporting storytellers in Hollywood. “This ministry started growing and I slowly started seeing others join with the same feeling,” she remarked.

Covell’s purpose with the prayer network is clear: to create an environment where the creativity of Hollywood is met with faith and community support.
