Titans Trade Jeffery Simmons to Bears, Raising Questions About QB Cam Ward

3 hours ago 0

The Tennessee Titans have shaken up the 2026 NFL season by trading their four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears. In exchange, the Titans receive two first-round draft picks and a fourth-round selection. This deal strengthens the Bears’ defense as they aim for their first Super Bowl since 1985. Meanwhile, Tennessee gains valuable draft assets to aid in their rebuilding efforts.

The trade has sparked discussions about quarterback Cam Ward’s future with the Titans. Ward’s performance in his second NFL season has been underwhelming. With the Titans holding a 1-6 record, speculation has arisen regarding the team’s plans for their quarterback position before the trade deadline on November 10.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter commented on the situation during Thursday’s episode of “NFL Live.” He stated, “The Tennessee Titans continue to stand squarely behind Cam Ward, and they still believe in him. Now that always could change, of course. But I think they think that he’s had three different head coaches. He’s had three different offensive coordinators. He’s a season and a half through his NFL career. And they believe he deserves the time he needs to develop into the quarterback that they still think he will be. They are not thinking quarterback right now.”

In his current season, Ward has completed 129 of 208 passes at a 62% completion rate, totaling 1,179 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions, along with 71 rushing yards. He has also sustained 11 sacks, resulting in a passer rating of 73.8, which is lower than the 80.2 rating from his rookie year. Despite efforts to support Ward with fresh talent, including rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate, free agent Wan’Dale Robinson, and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, improvements have not been evident.

Considering Cam Ward’s young age of 24, the Titans appear reluctant to shift away from him. A sudden move to replace him with a veteran quarterback could impact his confidence negatively. Nevertheless, if he fails to turn his fortunes, Tennessee might face a challenging decision during the draft season.

With two first-round picks in both the 2027 and 2028 NFL Drafts, the Titans have positioned themselves to potentially select a top quarterback prospect. Possible candidates might include Darian Mensah, Dante Moore, Arch Manning, Trinidad Chambliss, Julian Sayin, and CJ Carr. The Simmons trade does not necessarily mean the Titans have lost faith in Ward, offering instead a strategic advantage for the team’s future decisions.
