Tim Curry Dies at 80: A Tribute to the Iconic Actor

Actor Tim Curry, renowned for his unforgettable role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the cult film “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” has passed away at the age of 80, as confirmed by his long-time manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz. The cause of death remains undisclosed.

Curry is celebrated for his portrayal in the 1975 “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” However, his versatile talent secured his place in the hearts of many fans of horror and mystery films. Notable performances include roles as Wadsworth in “Clue” and Pennywise in the TV adaptation of Stephen King’s “It” in 1990.

Tim Curry’s career faced challenges after suffering a stroke in 2012, which left him partially paralyzed. Despite this, his contributions to film, television, and theater remained significant.

Born in England on April 19, 1946, Curry’s career spanned five decades, accumulating hundreds of credits across various entertainment platforms. He initially marked his presence on stage with London’s company of the musical “Hair” before transitioning to film and television in Los Angeles.

Younger audiences may recognize Curry from roles such as Rooster Hannigan in “Annie” and Mr. Hector in the “Home Alone” sequel. He also thrilled fans as Long John Silver in “Muppet Treasure Island.” In animation, Curry famously voiced Captain Hook in “Peter Pan and the Pirates,” winning a Daytime Emmy.

Curry’s impressive work earned him three Tony nominations: first in 1980 for “Amadeus,” then in 1993 for “My Favorite Year,” and most recently in 2005 for his role in “Spamalot.”

Last year, Curry published his memoir, “Vagabond,” to mark the 50th anniversary of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” He reflected on the nuances between his real self and the characters he portrayed, noting, “The distinctions between who I really am and who I’ve pretended to be as an actor have proven to be a source of great disappointment to some audiences.”

In one of his final on-camera interviews, Curry, from his wheelchair, shared with CBS Sunday Morning how acting allowed him the freedom to be somebody else.
