The absence of Representative Tom Kean Jr., a notable figure from New Jersey, has stirred considerable intrigue since he vanished from public view nearly three months ago. His disappearance became notable after a political website reported in March that Kean had missed an entire week of votes in Washington.

Kean last recorded a vote in Congress on March 5, raising early suspicions. Missing a few votes might not initially seem concerning. Yet, following the Easter recess, his disappearance became more pronounced. His Republican colleagues from New Jersey reported they were left in the dark about his situation. Tensions increased when Republican leaders expressed frustration as their attempts to reach out to Kean went unanswered.

Attention surrounding his absence peaked in May. Dan Scharfenberger, Kean’s chief of staff, stated cryptically, ‘There are no cameras where Tom is.’ This added to the confusion.

Despite being absent, Kean was on the ballot for the New Jersey primary on Tuesday, facing no opposition from within his party. His only known interactions during this period were phone calls to a New Jersey political journalist and Republican figures in his district. Joe LaBarbera, chairman of the Republican Party in Sussex County, recounted that when asked if Kean needed anything, Kean’s terse response was, ‘Just your prayers.’

Kean’s aides have cited a ‘personal medical issue’ as the reason for his absence. They have assured the public since April that he is anticipated to recover fully and return to his duties soon. Yet, as the congressional primary approached, the specifics of his situation remained a mystery.
