Cursive writing used to be a standard part of the curriculum for American schoolchildren. In the early 20th century, it was the predominant form of handwriting education, replacing today’s standard print writing commonly introduced to young children.

During that era, there was a belief that someone’s character might be judged by the quality of their cursive handwriting. This mindset contributed to the widespread teaching of cursive in schools.
