The Odyssey Soars at the Box Office, Led by Director Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan’s expansive adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’ captured the top spot at the box office over the weekend, drawing substantial attention with $124.5 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada.

Traditionally, Hollywood’s focus has shifted towards established franchises and intellectual properties, sidelining directors and stars. Icons like Harry Potter and Iron Man have overshadowed individual creators. Yet Christopher Nolan stands out as a rare exception, and the massive opening of ‘The Odyssey’ highlights his unique ability to attract audiences.

Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ marks a milestone as the first commercial feature fully filmed in IMAX, contributing significantly to its blockbuster status. Rentrak, a film data service, confirms its revenue of $124.5 million between Thursday and Sunday, marking it as the largest domestic opening for a live-action film this year. In 2026’s overall rankings, it follows ‘Toy Story 5,’ with $160 million and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ with $132 million.

PostTrak, a film industry research firm, noted that most viewers attributed their choice to Nolan, with the film’s ensemble cast being the second major draw. The cast includes prominent figures such as Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, and Tom Holland in various roles.

IMAX screenings accounted for approximately 24 percent of the total opening sales, with AMC Entertainment, the world’s leading theater company, organizing shows as early as 2 a.m. to accommodate demand. Date-specific presales indicate that IMAX film showings are already sold out in the fifth week for numerous theaters, demonstrating enduring interest, according to Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.
