The Dismissal of Scott Pelley
Veteran journalist Scott Pelley was dismissed from 60 Minutes on Tuesday after a meeting with new executive producer Nick Bilton. This move followed a heated exchange in which Pelley accused Bari Weiss of harming the show’s integrity. In an email to CBS staff, Bilton stated that Pelley’s negative attitude towards the show’s future led to his termination “for cause effective immediately.”
Pelley responded, claiming new management pressured him to introduce biases into sensitive stories. His statement revealed that the changes at 60 Minutes made the leadership unrecognizable and forced him to leave a position he held dear.
Reactions from CBS Management
On a staff call following Pelley’s firing, Bari Weiss, the recently appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News, emphasized the importance of trust and respect in the newsroom. She expressed regret about the inability to reconcile differences with Pelley.
Pelley’s exit is part of broader changes at CBS following Weiss’s appointment. These include the dismissal of Tanya Simon, Sharyn Alfonsi, and Cecilia Vega from 60 Minutes.
“The wall between editorial independence and corporate interest at CBS is being methodically torn down,” Alfonsi commented on her own departure.
Vega also criticized the political bias presented by the new management, suggesting it led to self-censorship by the reporting teams.
The Impact of Corporate Changes
These editorial shifts at 60 Minutes coincide with major corporate changes. CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, merged with Skydance Media, placing David Ellison in a key leadership role. Paramount is also seeking to merge with Warner Bros., with regulatory approval pending.
Scott Pelley’s Storied Career
Pelley had an illustrious 37-year tenure with CBS, serving as an anchor of CBS Evening News and covering significant events such as presidential politics and wars. His work earned him over 40 Emmy Awards.
In an earlier broadcast, Pelley voiced concerns about increasing corporate oversight following Bill Owens’s resignation, noting that CBS had not blocked stories but had reduced editorial independence.
The New Leadership at CBS News
Nick Bilton, a significant presence in documentary filmmaking, now leads 60 Minutes. Previously a tech columnist at The New York Times and a correspondent at Vanity Fair, Bilton described his new role as an honor and expressed his commitment to high-standard news programming.
Bilton’s letter to Pelley spoke of a missed opportunity for collaboration and accused Pelley of publicly undermining the show.
Recent Leadership Changes and Bari Weiss’s Vision
Bari Weiss, who assumed her role in October 2025, aims to diversify CBS News’s digital offerings. Her career spans roles at The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She left The Times, citing hostile treatment due to her conservative views.
