Thai authorities have detained numerous individuals on suspicion of prostitution in Pattaya as part of a crackdown preceding the arrival of approximately 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines. The operations took place over the weekend and resulted in the detention of 40 to 50 people, according to reports from Reuters and local media.
The USS Abraham Lincoln reached eastern Thailand on Wednesday, marking the end of an extensive deployment that lasted over 200 days without a port call. This prolonged sea time led U.S. lawmakers to demand investigations into conditions and mental health issues aboard the vessel.
This deployment emanated from a tactical shift in January when the carrier was redirected from the South China Sea to the Middle East amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions. Now, sailors and Marines have an opportunity for relaxation in Thailand before heading to the ship’s home base in San Diego.
Pattaya, known for its vibrant nightlife and the visibility of sex tourism, often encounters challenges with illegal prostitution. Despite its prohibition, the enforcement remains inconsistent, as conferred by officials and advocate groups.
Pattaya police chief Anek Srathongyoo expressed difficulties in managing the situation, remarking, “We are doing our best, but it is difficult,” in a statement noted by Reuters.
A recent “late-night inspection” of the beach and other popular areas of Pattaya on August 29 underscores ongoing efforts by police and local officials, as reported by The Pattaya Mail.
