The Chicago Cubs manager, Craig Counsell, has announced two more injuries, adding to the growing list of sidelined players. This season began with promise but has faced numerous setbacks. Matt Shaw and Ethan Roberts are the latest to join the injured list during a challenging 2026 season.
With temperatures soaring into the mid-90s and winds favoring hitters, Counsell must find the right pitching combinations. He also hopes veterans like Alex Bregman can capitalize on summer conditions to improve.
The Cubs started the season strong, boasting a respectable 46-38 record despite struggles. Counsell acknowledges the challenges but doesn’t dwell on comparisons. “There are challenges in a major-league season,” Counsell stated. “We’ve had a high number of pitching injuries, yes. But that’s how baseball seasons work.”
Early season optimism was high after a strong start, even with injuries. The team seemed capable of competing with top teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, further injuries and inconsistent performances from players like Bregman and Pete Crow-Armstrong have tested the team’s resilience.
Crow-Armstrong, despite a tough start, has become one of the better hitters after dealing with a viral incident. “I don’t need anybody to believe in me,” he said, emphasizing the support within the team.
Alex Bregman, struggling with a .163 average with runners in scoring position, aims to improve his performance. “I just want to be in a consistent spot to hit the ball hard in the air,” he stated.
On Sunday, Bregman didn’t run full speed on a play but noted his history of injuries as a reason. “I had 10 soft tissue injuries running down the first base line specifically,” he explained.
The Cubs look for a turnaround, similar to Dansby Swanson’s recent success. Counsell emphasizes the importance of focusing on pitching despite no imminent trades for help.
Counsell was brought to Chicago to solve problems and hopes to guide the team to the postseason, validating the decision to hire him.
