Texas Mom Encounters Viral Concerns Over Daughter’s Appearance

A mother from Texas experienced a wave of social media attention when she posted a photograph of her oldest daughter online. Kiely Branch, a mom of four young children with another on the way, often shares the chaotic yet amusing aspects of family life on social media.

“Life in our house is definitely never boring,” she expressed to Newsweek. According to a 2021 survey by Security.org, 77% of U.S. parents share stories, photos, or videos about their children on social media, emphasizing the widespread practice known as “sharenting.”

However, a recent TikTok post by Branch featuring her 4-year-old daughter drew unexpected attention, leading to an influx of messages advising Branch to seek medical advice. The focus was on one particular physical characteristic.

Initially, the post had low viewership, and Branch considered removing it. “The views were extremely low, and I even considered deleting it one night. Then I woke up the next morning and it had completely taken off,” she shared.

Once Branch started reading the comments, she discovered the reason behind the sudden interest. “A surprising number of people were telling me that I needed to have my daughter checked for a particular genetic condition because of her eyebrows.”

Branch was accustomed to a mixture of opinions and advice generated by viral posts, but this situation felt different as other mothers advised her to consult a pediatrician urgently.

The condition discussed in the comments was Sanfilippo syndrome. This rare genetic disorder, known as mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III), hinders the body’s ability to break down certain sugars, causing damage especially in the brain and nervous system.

Sanfilippo syndrome symptoms manifest in early childhood, including developmental delays and speech issues. Some physical characteristics such as prominent eyebrows and a broad forehead may appear, yet these features alone do not indicate the presence of the condition.

Branch found the situation perplexing. “Her eyebrows aren’t unusual in our family. They’re dark and full, but they’re not coarse, and both her father and I naturally have very full eyebrows. Unibrows, actually,” she remarked. Despite this, she decided to further research into Sanfilippo syndrome.

Realizing her daughter displayed none of the other symptoms associated with the syndrome, Branch explained, “She’s never had an ear infection, doesn’t have the GI issues people were mentioning, sleeps extremely well, and we’ve never had concerns raised about her head circumference or development by her pediatrician or any medical professionals.”

The experience was surreal for Branch, with strangers suggesting a diagnosis from mere photographs. “Imagine walking into the pediatrician’s office and saying, ‘Hi, TikTok told me my daughter has a genetic disorder because of her eyebrows.'” Frustration mounted as comments implied neglect towards her daughter’s health.

Ultimately, Branch reflected on the peculiar nature of the online events. “It has been really interesting, and sometimes hilarious, watching the internet try to figure out a child they’ve never met from two photographs.”
