Texans Cope with Rising Beef Prices Amid Election Season

9 minutes ago 0

The rising cost of living stands out as a significant concern for voters leading up to the 2026 midterm elections. In Texas, beef prices play a crucial role in illustrating the broader economic landscape.

In August, ground beef reached unprecedented prices, hitting around $7 per pound. This marks an increase of approximately $1.50 from prices during President Trump’s return to office for his second term. Russell Boening, a seasoned farmer and rancher based near Floresville, Texas, experiences the repercussions of escalating fuel costs firsthand.

Boening shared with Morning Edition’s A Martínez how these costs impact various farm expenses, including fertilizers and seeds. Along with high fuel costs, drought conditions further constrain the beef supply while demand remains strong.

In response to high prices, the Trump administration lifted tariffs on some foreign beef imports. Boening notes that this policy aims at price reduction, yet affects his earnings in the short term. Many farmers suffered financial losses, ranging from $400 to $500 per head following the tariff removal.

An analysis by the American Farm Bureau Federation revealed that ground beef prices only saw a slight 2% decrease after this policy change. Consumers in Seguin, Texas, shared their perspectives while shopping at HEB. Sheri Moczygemba expressed willingness to pay current prices to continue enjoying beef, despite their increase.

Brisket priced at $38 per pound at Burnt Bean Co. restaurant in Seguin shows how local businesses cope with these shifts. Co-owner Ernest Servantes emphasizes the consumers’ appreciation for quality, even if it means enduring a two-hour wait for a table.

Though the Texas Farm Bureau favors Republican candidates for the Senate and governorship, business owners like Servantes remain undecided. Their votes hinge on candidates’ plans to assist the middle class and small businesses.
