Tension Arises Following US Border Patrol Official’s Visit to Charlotte Bakery

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Manolo Bentancur recently encountered Greg Bovino, the former U.S. Border Patrol commander, at his bakery. Bentancur, concerned about the implications of Bovino’s presence, told him the bakery property was private, highlighting community fears associated with immigration enforcement.

Bovino and his cameraman were in the bakery’s parking lot when Bentancur arrived to pick up his wife from work. Bovino’s involvement in a past operation, named Operation Charlotte’s Web, remains fresh in memory. This federal immigration sweep led to over 1,300 arrests and was linked to activities near the bakery.

During their conversation, Bentancur recalls Bovino recognizing him as the bakery owner who closed the business in November to support undocumented individuals. Bovino disputes the details, stating he merely stayed outside and had no intention of entering the bakery. He claims he was documenting businesses from the previous operation.

Bovino questioned Bentancur on his choice to support undocumented individuals over American citizens. Bentancur interprets the interaction as indicative of ongoing challenges his community faces, including negative reviews and vandalism targeting his business.

Action NC, an advocacy organization, condemned Bovino’s visit as an intimidation tactic. They assert Bentancur’s quick response demonstrated resilience. Héctor Vaca, Immigrant Justice Director at Action NC, praised Bentancur’s leadership, encouraging Charlotte to support the bakery.

Bovino announced plans to upload a video of the interaction online. Meanwhile, Action NC continues to support Bentancur, emphasizing his role as a community leader committed to empowerment and support.
