Tension Among Senate Republicans Following Trump’s Texas Senate Endorsement

4 weeks ago 0

The atmosphere among Senate Republicans shifted significantly when President Donald Trump announced his choice in the Texas Senate race. Many senators were already heading to a private lunch planned to address the halted immigration funding package and strategies for a significant week in the Senate. However, Trump’s decision to support Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over the long-serving Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, left many lawmakers visibly concerned. There is a fear that this choice could jeopardize a Senate seat that has been reliably Republican for years.

Ken Paxton vs. John Cornyn
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is facing off against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a GOP primary runoff. According to Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Trump’s endorsement of Paxton has brought potential risks. ‘I am supremely disappointed,’ Murkowski stated. She believes the decision makes a Republican loss in Texas more likely, asking how it could help strengthen the president’s position if Texas falls.

The runoff winner will compete against Texas state Rep. James Talarico in the November elections. Talarico, who earlier this year defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, has gained endorsements from notable Democrats, including former President Barack Obama.

Republican Concerns and Support
Although history favors Paxton, as Texas hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988, many Republicans saw Cornyn as the preferable candidate. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., who led the campaign arm that secured the GOP majority in 2024, still supports Cornyn, citing him as the safer choice. Cornyn has criticized Paxton for controversies including an impeachment and is concerned that Paxton could harm the GOP’s chances in upcoming elections.

Cornyn emphasized the importance of having a strong nominee to aid down-ballot Republicans and challenge Talarico in November. Paxton’s campaign strategist, Nick Maddux, claimed that Paxton, who has won three statewide elections, would be the Republican nominee, dismissing Cornyn’s record.

Democratic Hopes and GOP Divisions
The endorsement has infused enthusiasm among Senate Republicans, already troubled by Sen. Bill Cassidy’s, R-La., primary defeat to Trump-backed Rep. Julia Letlow, R-La. With the election arriving, Cornyn and Paxton will compete once more. Many of Cornyn’s colleagues remain reluctant to endorse Paxton, who some believe carries issues that could threaten the seat.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., who lobbied for Cornyn’s endorsement from Trump, acknowledged that Trump’s choice was his own. ‘Senator Cornyn is a principled conservative,’ Thune stated. ‘He has been an effective senator for Texas. We do not control the president’s decisions. I continue to support Senator Cornyn in his re-election.’
