Tennessee Primaries Test Trump’s Influence and Reshape Political Landscape

President Donald Trump’s influence among Republican voters faced a test in Tennessee with the state’s first primaries under a newly redrawn congressional map. This map aims to strengthen Republicans’ hold in the U.S. House for the upcoming fall elections. The outcomes resulted in mixed results for Trump in key Republican House primaries in Tennessee.

In the 9th Congressional District, Trump-backed state Sen. Brent Taylor secured the GOP nomination. Meanwhile, in the 5th District, former Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher defeated Trump-endorsed incumbent Rep. Andy Ogles. Taylor’s win sets the stage for a November contest against progressive state Rep. Justin Pearson, known for his expulsion after a gun control protest in 2023.

Elsewhere, Sen. Marsha Blackburn won the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Her victory could lead to her becoming Tennessee’s first female governor and may open a Senate appointment opportunity.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Tennessee! We have made Tennessee a leader in conservative values,” Blackburn said. “I am honored to be your choice for Governor. I promise not to disappoint. On to November.”

Ogles’ defeat marked a setback for Trump, who endorsed him as a strong businessman and America First advocate. Hatcher, with support from Governor Bill Lee, unseated Ogles despite Trump’s backing. Outside efforts, including significant spending by a clean-energy PAC, opposed Ogles and favored Hatcher.

The redrawn districts have reshaped Tennessee’s political map. The 5th District became more Republican, presenting Ogles with a new GOP electorate. The 9th District, previously Democratic-controlled, now leans Republican, prompting Rep. Steve Cohen to exit the race.

Taylor’s victory in the primary offers the GOP a chance at a complete takeover of Tennessee’s congressional representation. Pearson, championed by members of the ‘Squad,’ including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, strives to maintain Democratic presence in the Memphis-area district.

Blackburn’s gubernatorial win over Rep. John Rose highlights her path to the governor’s office in a Republican-dominated state. Should Blackburn win in November, it could lead to a Senate vacancy, sparking speculation about potential successors.
