Teen Pleads Guilty in Georgia School Shooting Case

On Friday morning, Colt Gray, a teenager charged in the 2024 shooting at Georgia’s Apalachee High School, pleaded guilty to all 55 charges against him. The shooting resulted in the deaths of four students and injuries to nine others.

Gray entered a “non-negotiated” plea, admitting guilt to all charges without a pre-arranged deal. He faced charges including malice murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated assault. The potential sentence could total up to 180 years, with a maximum of 30 years for second-degree murder charges.

The plea comes after attempts by Gray’s attorneys to negotiate a plea deal. Judge Nicholas Primm had set a deadline for a potential agreement. Due to extensive media coverage, Primm ordered the trial moved to Columbia County to ensure impartiality. If needed, the plea hearing may continue into the following week.

A Father’s Involvement

Beyond Colt Gray’s charges, his father, Colin Gray, was convicted on 27 counts related to the incident. These included second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, making him the first parent charged in a Georgia school shooting.

Prosecutors argued Colin Gray gave his son the weapon used in the shooting as a gift, ignoring signs of Colt’s mental health issues. Evidence suggested Colt Gray had an obsession with school shooters, exemplified by a “shrine” dedicated to Nikolas Cruz, the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.

Colin Gray admitted to gifting the rifle, claiming intentions of bonding through hunting and range visits. His sentencing is set for July 30.

The Shooting Incident

On September 4, 2024, then-14-year-old Colt Gray brought a semiautomatic assault-style rifle onto a school bus, concealed within a book bag. He exited his second-period class, emerged from a bathroom with the rifle, and began shooting in a classroom and hallways.

Investigative reports from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed notebooks where Colt Gray detailed plans for the shooting, including a note targeting his teacher first.

Victims included students Mason Schermerhorn, Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie. Another teacher and eight students sustained injuries.

Colt Gray surrendered to school resource officers at the scene and has remained in custody since then.
