Suspect in Custody for Chicago Employee’s Shooting Death; Family Mourns

A suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting death of a Chicago city employee found fatally wounded earlier this year. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued on August 26 for Darreon Plummer, 33, accused of killing 36-year-old D’aJ Flowers. The incident occurred on February 6 in the 6900 block of North Bell Avenue in the West Ridge community, where they shared a residence.

Flowers, who was Plummer’s girlfriend, died of multiple gunshot wounds, as confirmed by the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Her brother, Demone Flowers, revealed that police informed them about the arrest, stating Plummer is in custody in Washington state, north of Seattle. Although a Chicago police spokesman did not verify this, records from Snohomish County indicate Plummer is indeed in custody and was booked on September 1.

Plummer appeared in a Washington State court on September 2 for a warrant identification hearing, where he signed a waiver of extradition. As of Tuesday morning, Plummer remains in Washington, with no clear timeline for his return to Chicago.

“My sister was never a violent person,” Demone Flowers, 35, remarked about his late sister. “She was always loving and caring.”

Following her death, Cook County Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $10,000 for assistance in apprehending her killer. Prior to her death, D’aJ Flowers had been employed in Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, working in the Freedom of Information Act division and the subpoena unit. OEMC spokeswoman Mary May confirmed these details, adding that Flowers had also worked for the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Demone Flowers noted that his sister had been pursuing a promotion around the time of her death. He described her as a versatile and dedicated individual.

The Flowers’ family suffered another tragic loss this year. In July, their mother, 53-year-old Surbezz Clark, was fatally shot outside a gas station in the Auburn Gresham community. This incident, in which another person died and two were wounded, remains unsolved with no arrests made.

“Our family has gotten much closer,” Demone Flowers commented, explaining how the tragedies have strengthened their bond. He continues to draw inspiration from his sister’s resilience and dedication to work.
