Stephen A. Smith Criticizes NABJ After Receiving ‘Thumbs Down’ Award

1 hour ago 0

ESPN host Stephen A. Smith expressed his disapproval of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) following their decision to award him a ‘Thumbs Down’ at a gala in Atlanta. Smith described the action as a ‘personal hit job’ during his show on Monday.

The NABJ gave the award due to what it termed Smith’s ‘repeated disparagement’ of prominent Black women. In response, Smith criticized the organization’s judgment, stating it lacked journalistic integrity. He questioned why NABJ President Errin Haines did not contact him directly regarding their accusations. Smith suspected the award was linked to his critiques of political figures such as Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett.

In his show, Smith recounted attempting to address the matter with Haines. However, their communication failed to progress. He stated that Haines preferred a private discussion rather than a public dialogue, causing him to decide not to engage further.

Despite his criticism, Smith emphasized his continued support for NABJ. He credited the organization with helping him in his early career and expressed no intent to oppose the broader group or its members. His objection focused on the specific decision-makers behind the award.

An editor from the Media Research Center, known for its conservative stance, supported Smith’s criticism. Curtis Houck, the Managing Editor, accused journalism organizations of being disconnected and described them as wanting to maintain an elitist stance.

Fox News reached out to NABJ for comments but did not receive an immediate response. Footage of the award presentation highlighted Smith’s perceived pattern of derogatory commentary against Black women in various sectors, which NABJ argued ran counter to their commitment to fair representation.
