St. Charles North’s Ben Auer stepped into a significant role this spring. Forced into the ace position, Auer filled the gap left by Northwestern football recruit Keaton Reinke’s early graduation and Matt Ritchie’s injury. Auer embraced his new role, becoming the team’s leading pitcher.
Reflecting on his journey, Auer explained, “I’ve embraced it throughout the year. The confidence has grown with each outing.” Auer demonstrated his skills by striking out seven batters without walking any, allowing just one run and scattering five hits over five innings. His performance led the North Stars to a 3-2 victory over South Elgin in the Class 4A St. Charles North Regional championship.
Auer also made significant contributions at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Teammate Ty Gleason supported with two hits, including a double. In a key moment, Reed Raczka hit a triple and scored twice, while Josh Kobylinski closed the game by retiring the final five batters, securing the save for the North Stars. They will face Huntley next in the McHenry Sectional semifinals.
South Elgin also put up a strong fight with Zacharia Barkho matching Auer on the mound, striking out seven across six innings. Barkho allowed two earned runs on seven hits. Alex Muro contributed with two hits and an RBI.
Although Auer had limited pitching time last season, Coach Todd Genke had faith in his potential. “He stepped up big time. A real competitor,” Genke remarked. Auer was not initially the team’s top pitcher. However, his commitment and talent earned him the role of ace. His steady presence allowed other players to settle into their roles.
Auer kept South Elgin at bay early in the game, allowing only one runner to score. His composed performance helped the team maintain control. “I knew after Wednesday, I had to come ready to perform,” Auer reflected. Despite mounting challenges, Auer maintained composure and handed over the game to the bullpen after five innings.
Kobylinski finished the game with a strong performance. “Koby has been good all year; we trust him to get the job done,” Auer praised his teammate.
South Elgin’s coach, David Palmer, praised his team’s tenacity, saying, “We knew a couple runs with the wind blowing would be key in this playoff atmosphere.”
Auer found personal satisfaction in the victory, avenging last year’s loss to South Elgin. “They beat us last year, so this win means a lot. We’re excited to continue our season.”
