Man in Spider-Man Costume Sparks Interest Amid Minneapolis Rally

The Minneapolis Police Department identified William Nicholas Love as the individual dressed in a Spider-Man costume during a chaotic rally outside City Hall. On August 22, social media buzzed with videos showing Love, in the superhero outfit, confronting far-right activist Jake Lang. The footage portrayed Love climbing onto a pickup truck associated with Lang, appearing to engage in physical contact as tensions flared between supporters and counterprotesters.

The police confirmed his arrest, with a spokesperson stating: “Nicholas William Love II, 33, was arrested for alleged assault while dressed as Spider-Man.” Despite social media labeling Love as a “hero,” the police reiterated their stance on the incident by saying, “We confirmed the individual’s identity and that person was arrested for assault. This behavior does not align with being a hero.”

Events at Minneapolis City Hall Rally

The rally took place outside Minneapolis City Hall, where Lang organized a “peaceful freedom of speech rally.” However, the event attracted a significantly larger crowd of counterprotesters. Minneapolis police were aware of the demonstration in advance and had implemented measures including barriers to separate vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Lang and associates arrived shortly before noon in two vehicles that reportedly drove onto a sidewalk near City Hall. This maneuver led to immediate conflict between those linked to the vehicles and gathered protesters. Police responded with chemical deterrents as objects were thrown at officers during efforts to diffuse the situation. Officers quickly surrounded the vehicles to separate them from the crowd.

Video evidence depicts an individual, later identified as Love, in a Spider-Man costume climbing onto a truck and engaging Lang physically. The police pulled Love away and placed him under arrest.

William Nicholas Love, 33, was among 11 individuals arrested amid the unrest. Released after his August 22 arrest for assault, Love rose to online prominence linked to his choice of costume. Fundraisers emerged on GoFundMe supporting Love, including the “Support Spider-Man’s Legal Defense” campaign by Ash Chudgar. Chudgar stated he is liaising with Love’s family to ensure any funds raised go directly to him. Contributions exceeded $32,000.

Another GoFundMe page organized by Keyssy Ayala Castro Figueroa shared images of the masked Love and his mugshot, collecting over $10,000. Love expressed his concerns: “I’m known as the Minnesota ‘Spiderman’ and need help following a violent incident on August 22. I acted to protect those around me, which left me injured and unable to perform.”

Background of Jake Lang

Edward Jacob Lang, age 31, is noted for his conservative activism and past involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, from which he was pardoned. Lang announced intentions on social media to host a “peaceful Freedom of Speech” rally at City Hall.

His presence drew protests, with fewer than 12 attending Lang’s event, contrasted by a much larger crowd opposing his views outside City Hall.

Multiple Arrests During City Hall Confrontation

Authorities arrested 11 individuals in connection with events surrounding Minneapolis City Hall over the weekend. Lang, among seven detained after police halted two vehicles linked to his faction, faced riot allegations and required hospital care for unrelated injuries prior to jail booking.

Besides Love, three others were arrested near City Hall. Additionally, three officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the clashes. Police also noted a report from an alleged assault victim in front of City Hall. Investigations are ongoing, utilizing video evidence to assess more charges or arrests.
