The Social Security Administration (SSA) plans to issue a unique commemorative Social Security card to babies born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026. This initiative coincides with America’s 250th anniversary and features the Freedom 250 logo, while maintaining the same functionality as standard Social Security cards.

The limited-edition design marks the first time an official federal document in the U.S. incorporates a commemorative symbol. Only those born during this specified six-month window will receive the Freedom 250 design, offering a rare memento connected to the nation’s milestone anniversary.

SSA’s Initiative and the Celebration of America’s History

SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano elaborated on the initiative’s significance: “Freedom 250 celebrates America’s storied history and the pivotal moments in our past, including the Social Security program’s creation over 90 years ago.” Under President Donald J. Trump’s leadership, enhancements in Social Security aim to better serve Americans now and in the future.

This initiative leverages the Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, automatically issuing these cards without extra paperwork or fees. The EAB program, operational since 1987, has facilitated hospital and state vital records office partnerships to issue Social Security numbers at birth. Over 3.5 million children are born in the United States annually, meaning millions of families could partake in receiving these commemorative cards during the specified period.

Practical Details and Safeguards for Families

The SSA assures that the commemorative design will not alter a child’s Social Security number or the legal card functions. Replacement cards and those requested beyond the enrollment period will not feature the Freedom 250 design.

Families need not provide additional information or fees beyond standard birth registration. SSA advises parents to remain cautious of potential scams, emphasizing that the agency will not request payments or information via calls, texts, or emails.
