Shooting at Virginia State University Leaves Five Injured

At Virginia State University (VSU), a shooting left at least five people injured early Saturday morning. One victim remains in critical condition, confirmed by university officials and the VSU Police Department.

Police arrested Camron Harris, 19, from Henrico, Virginia. He was found hiding on campus in a dormitory closet. Harris is not a VSU student, and Chesterfield County Police stated they obtained eight felony warrants related to the case. Charges include malicious wounding and firearm use during a felony. Currently, it’s unclear if Harris has legal representation.

“Officers responded to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street around 1:28 a.m. They discovered five individuals with gunshot wounds outside VSU residence halls,” a university official informed Fox News Digital.

The five injured individuals were taken to local hospitals. While one remains critically injured, others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The university posted earlier about the shooting involving multiple suspects. No additional arrests have been reported. Police have not given further details on any ongoing search for other suspects.

VSU, a historically black college and university (HBCU), is situated in Ettrick, Virginia, about 25 miles from Richmond. One victim, confirmed as a VSU student, sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was released from the hospital. The victims are aged between 17 and 23. Of the five, four are not VSU students, and the VSU student is 20 years old. Their names remain undisclosed, and a motive is not known at this time.

VSU police mentioned that the shooting took place near the school’s Quad Annexes student housing complex.

The university assured that law enforcement finds no immediate threat to the VSU community. They acknowledged the concern caused among students and the wider VSU community.

Following the shooting, the campus initially went into lockdown, which has since been lifted. The incident happened as residential halls opened to students for the fall semester, with classes starting Monday.

Rozia A. Henson Jr., a Virginia House of Delegates member, expressed his sentiments on social media, praying for victims and families. He shared a message of support with the VSU community.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger also commented, stating she and her husband are praying for those affected and thanked first responders.

The Chesterfield County Police Department, aided by VSU police, U.S. Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF), and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, is conducting the investigation.
