In Santa Clara, California, Coach Kyle Shanahan made a brief appearance on the practice field of the San Francisco 49ers. Standing alongside General Manager John Lynch, Shanahan attended the first training camp session for about 30 minutes. This was his first sighting since an accident left him with a concussion and several injuries.
Star linebacker Fred Warner expressed his relief at seeing Shanahan. ‘I know he can’t stay away,’ Warner commented, acknowledging Shanahan’s dedication to the game. Despite his injuries, which include a concussion, broken ribs, nose, and hand, Shanahan couldn’t resist attending Sunday’s practice. However, he has temporarily stepped back from his leadership role.
Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Line Coach Chris Foerster is overseeing team responsibilities. The incident occurred on July 14 in Palo Alto. Since then, Shanahan’s return depends on his recovery from concussion symptoms. At practice, he wore a cast, sunglasses, and sported a new mustache, evoking playful comments from Warner.
Veteran players and coaches affirmed their confidence in Foerster’s temporary leadership. Foerster has tapped into his extensive coaching network, collaborating closely with Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer. ‘He’s been doing this longer than anybody else in the locker room,’ remarked veteran tackle Trent Williams.
Foerster brings decades of NFL experience, beginning with the Minnesota Vikings in 1993. His history with the Shanahans dates back to Washington, where he previously worked under Mike and Kyle. Despite a setback in his career in 2017 while with Miami, Foerster praises the 49ers organization for their continued support.
“He’s one of my best friends in the world by far,” Foerster said of Shanahan.
As for player updates, defensive end Nick Bosa participated in individual drills. This marks his return after an ACL injury last season. Williams noted Bosa’s impressive recovery, stating, “Bosa looks better than he did before he got hurt.”
Other notable news from the session includes OL Vederian Lowe leaving early due to an ankle injury. Cornerback Nate Hobbs didn’t participate in practice. Meanwhile, the team re-signed defensive tackle Kevin Givens after releasing Evan Anderson. Connor Colby is set to compete for the starting left guard position.
