Sen. Thom Tillis Discusses GOP Challenges Ahead of 2026 Midterms

11 minutes ago 0

Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina expressed doubts about the Republican Party’s ability to maintain control of the House in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Speaking on MS NOW’s ‘The Beat’ with host Ari Melber, Tillis remarked on the factors affecting the GOP, including internal divisions stemming from President Trump’s leadership.

Sen. Tillis stated, “I’m supporting the president because he’s the head of the party, not because he’s Donald J. Trump, but because he is the face of our party. And I want my party to be in the best position for elections. We’re going to take a hit this season and recover from it, I believe.”

With his current term ending, Tillis indicated that winning the House is almost statistically out of reach. However, he conveyed more optimism about the Senate, foreseeing tight margins but ultimately expecting Republicans to maintain control. “We have great candidates in states like Maine, Ohio, and Arkansas. They need to campaign vigorously, and we need to support them,” he emphasized.

The GOP faces challenges including Trump’s low approval ratings, an unpopular conflict in Iran, a tariff war with Canada, and persistent inflation impacting the cost of living. The Senate remains a battleground with polling averages labeling it a toss-up. Democrats require four additional seats to regain the Senate majority. Key races are competitive in states like Maine, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, and Alaska.

Polling by The New York Times/Siena indicates Democrats leading by six points in Texas, seven in Alaska, and three in Ohio. In Iowa, Democrats trail by one point, and in Kansas, there is a tie. The Ohio, Iowa, and Kansas polls have margins of error between 4.5 and 4.6 points.

Tillis’s current Senate seat is predicted to favor Democratic candidate Roy Cooper, the former governor, with Decision Desk HQ assigning an 84% chance of a Democratic takeover. This organization also forecasts a 76% probability of Democrats flipping the House and a 56% chance of reclaiming the Senate.
