Sen. Susan Collins: A Political Career Rooted in Hard Work and Determination

2 weeks ago 0

Senator Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, has built her career on a foundation of hard work and resilience. Her journey began in her hometown of Caribou, Maine, where as a child she joined other local children in helping farmers during the potato harvest in Aroostook County. Known locally as “The County,” this region instilled in Collins a strong work ethic that she carries into her political life.

I remember my mother saying to me when I was going to pick for the first time at age 10, saying, ‘Now, Susan, this is really hard, back-breaking work, but you cannot quit. The farmers are depending on you, and you can’t let them down,’ Collins shared in an interview with Fox News Digital. These words have remained a guiding principle throughout her career.

Collins’ upbringing in Caribou, where her parents both served as mayors, helped shape her into a formidable political figure. Her consistent record, exemplified by her historic 10,000th consecutive vote in the Senate, underscores her dedication. Thanks to her efforts, she now holds a prominent position as the chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.

However, Collins faces a challenging election season with increased scrutiny from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, who is determined to capture her Senate seat. The current election cycle pits her against Democratic challenger Graham Platner. His campaign is marred by several scandals, but Collins remains vigilant, recognizing the seriousness of his candidacy.

Collins expressed surprise at not facing Maine Governor Janet Mills as her opponent, considering the serious allegations surrounding Platner. Despite Platner’s attacks, including criticisms of Collins’ past votes such as her authorization of the Iraq War and support for some of Donald Trump’s policies, she believes her record speaks volumes to the voters in Maine. She emphasizes her accomplishments and the tangible results she has delivered for the state.

Her tenure has seen her secure $1.5 billion for Maine over five years, fund multiple fire stations, and bolster rural healthcare. Despite her achievements, Collins faces a tight race. Schumer is seizing the chance to challenge her, even with a candidate not his top choice.

To me, this is déjà vu all over again, Collins commented, reflecting on past Democratic efforts to discredit her, including a $160 million campaign six years ago.

In her response to criticism over her confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Collins highlights her bipartisan approach by mentioning her votes for justices across ideological lines, including Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Collins will not always align with Donald Trump either, as evidenced by his recent description of her. Despite not being in his favor, she humorously notes her pragmatic approach to policy-making, considering each issue individually to benefit Maine’s families.
