Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, maintains his stance that Dr. Anthony Fauci should face prison time. On Tuesday, during an MS NOW interview, Paul discussed his past recommendations for Fauci’s incarceration.
Paul addressed Fauci’s use of the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during a Senate hearing overseen by Paul. The senator acknowledged uncertainty about what to expect from Fauci’s testimony. He speculated that Fauci might believe he could avoid legal troubles thanks to a possible pardon from former President Joe Biden.
Paul asserted, “Did he lie to Congress? I think he did. Lying to Congress is a felony, and those guilty should face charges and imprisonment if convicted. Destroying records and lying are serious crimes.” Paul’s focus remains on uncovering the truth about gain-of-function research linked to Fauci before COVID-19.
When asked if others should face investigation, Paul refrained from suggesting legal action but noted that those involved “should all apologize.” Yet, he stopped short of labeling Fauci’s actions as “nefarious.” Paul described Fauci’s attitude as condescending, marked by an “arrogance” towards public transparency.
Rand Paul has called for Fauci to be held in contempt after invoking the Fifth Amendment extensively. In a 2021 appearance on “Hannity,” Paul highlighted that lying about gain-of-function research carries a felony penalty. This research method involves altering organisms or viruses for study, potentially enhancing their capabilities.
According to Paul, the matter was referred to the Department of Justice. He expressed skepticism, saying, “I don’t think Biden’s Department of Justice will act on it. It’s dangerous when public officials, whom we must trust, lie to us repeatedly.” Fauci opted not to testify before a Senate committee regarding the U.S. response to COVID-19.
In 2024, Paul reiterated to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that Fauci should face jail time. “Several Trump administration officials were accused of lying and jailed. Fauci lied to Congress, as his private emails confirm,” Paul stated.
