In an unexpected turn of events, President Trump was relocated from Air Force One to another aircraft after intelligence agencies detected a possible missile threat. The switch occurred during the NATO conference in Ankara, Turkey, following a plot by Iran to target the presidential jet. This information was disclosed by CBS News.

Law enforcement and U.S. officials noted that concerns arose after flows of intelligence from the National Security Agency, the CIA, and Turkey’s MIT hinted at a credible Iranian plan. Though there were initial reports of a team in Turkey ready to launch the missile, further investigations uncovered no such team.

The shift to a different airplane happened on July 8, amid heightened tensions from an ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran. President Trump acknowledged the significant danger, labeling himself a primary target for Iranian threats before leaving Ankara.

According to officials, the decision to swap planes involved the National Security Council, the White House Military Office, and the Secret Service, coordinated from Washington, D.C. The president mentioned on Truth Social his preference for the older Air Force One for nostalgic reasons, contrasting with newer aircraft options.

Arrival footage at Ankara Esenboga Airport shows the president boarding the old Air Force One. Shortly thereafter, an airport catering vehicle transported him to a U.S. Air Force-operated C-32A jet, unbeknownst to most observers. The catering truck discreetly housed President Trump, aides Natalie Harp, Walt Nauta, and Dan Scavino. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth joined them for the flight to a U.K. military station.

The aircraft identified publicly as Air Force One transported Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, top White House aides, and press members. Critical figures like Rubio and Bessent were briefed on the decoy tactic, but others were left uninformed. In the U.K., President Trump transitioned to a newly refurbished aircraft for his return to Washington, D.C.

The secret operation became known earlier in the week when media outlets revealed details of the switch. Law enforcement emphasized the maneuver aimed at misdirecting threats rather than increasing risks for those remaining on the flight.

President Trump addressed the strategy, indicating military and Secret Service preferences for an alternate flight due to perceived threats. He remarked that his own transport posed greater danger than Air Force One, yet dismissed concerns, noting a high threat level is typical for consequential presidents.
