On Thursday, the SEC and commissioner Greg Sankey acted to prevent former NFL players from joining LSU’s roster before the regular season. This decision emphasizes the importance of maintaining college athletics rules by deterring the addition of players with professional contracts.
Historically, the rule was strict. Once an athlete signed with a professional team, returning to an NCAA team was not an option. Ahead of their season opener against Clemson, LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin opted not to include Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris in their 105-man roster.
During a segment on SEC Nation, ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum mentioned that some SEC members were sufficiently concerned about the situation to consider removing LSU from the conference. He stated, “What happened down there has left a stain on this league.” He also noted that while he doubted the league would vote LSU out, fans might not oppose such a decision.
Finebaum criticized Kiffin, describing him as a “child” and criticized LSU’s leadership for not supervising their first-year head coach. He commended Sankey for safeguarding the conference’s reputation. Finebaum said, “In a week of chaos, Greg Sankey was a hero, preserving the league’s integrity amid widespread moral decay in our game.”
The situation with Wright and Harris remains uncertain as to whether LSU will attempt to add them later this season.
