Seattle Shooting Leaves Three Dead, Ongoing Investigation Continues

Police now suspect that three individuals may have been involved in the mass shooting at Seattle Center on Sunday. The incident resulted in three fatalities and four injuries. Among those taken into custody is a 15-year-old, arrested in relation to the violence.

One of the suspected shooters died at the scene. This information came from a document filed in juvenile court in Seattle. Initially, it was thought that two gunmen were involved. However, the document suggests the 15-year-old, alongside an acquaintance found dead, may have exchanged gunfire with one or more unknown suspects. The search for the other suspected shooter is still active.

Seattle Police urged people to avoid the area.

The 15-year-old was recently booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of firearms violations and first-degree assault. Although expected to appear in court on Monday, the teenager waived the hearing. No homicide charges have been filed against the teen so far.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson stated, “We believe this teenager opened fire in the crowd, but details are still under investigation.” Seattle Police Department Chief Shon Barnes explained that investigators suspect an exchange of gunfire occurred outside the Seattle Center Armory, affecting multiple bystanders.

The shooting appears to stem from a conflict between small groups. A 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old man died at the scene despite attempts by first responders to save them. A 56-year-old woman was critically injured and later died at a local hospital. Four others were wounded, including a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and a 40-year-old woman. The toddler was initially in stable condition but has since improved to satisfactory condition.

Police are investigating if a 27-year-old man, who self-transported to a hospital, was an eighth victim. Confirmation of his involvement is pending. Harborview Medical Center spokesperson Susan Gregg said injuries involved patients’ arms, abdomen, and legs.

Emergency crews arrived at Seattle Center shortly after 6 p.m. The venue was hosting the Bite of Seattle food festival over the weekend. Mayor Wilson described the shooting as “an act of horrific violence,” emphasizing the impact on families and the community.

Governor Bob Ferguson received briefings and confirmed that State Patrol SWAT officers assisted Seattle Police. He expressed his concern for the victims and responders. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., shared her horror at the violence and expressed gratitude for the officers, responders, and medical professionals involved.

King County Executive Girmay Zahilay voiced his dismay over the incident, noting the importance of the Bite of Seattle as a summer tradition for many families and residents. Kayla Carris, 22, recounted the panic and chaos when shots were fired at the event. Todd Behrends, 59, witnessed the commotion as people scrambled to escape.
