Sean Penn to Direct Film About Capitol Riot Involving Police Officer

1 week ago 0

Warner Bros. has announced that Sean Penn will direct a movie centered on a police officer involved in the January 6 Capitol riot. Following his acclaimed role in “One Battle After Another,” Penn will work from his own screenplay. Bradley Cooper is considering a starring role, though discussions have not yet concluded.

Penn and Warner Bros. have not disclosed details about the film’s central character, though it is inspired by a real individual. Penn was present at the 2022 House Select Committee hearings on the attack, sitting alongside Metropolitan Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges. Both officers were active during the riot.

Officer Michael Fanone testified about his severe ordeal, recounting how he was attacked, tased, and called a traitor. This assault led to a heart attack, with the attackers stopping only when he mentioned his children. Officer Daniel Hodges also spoke about his difficult experience.

Penn attended the hearings as a concerned citizen, observing the proceedings and hoping for justice. The film will explore themes of an unexpected friendship. Production is planned to commence in mid-2027.

The film announcement coincides with recent news that the U.S. Justice Department will not oppose Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The $111 billion transaction, agreed upon in February, will position Warner Bros. under the leadership of David Ellison, the Paramount chief executive. Ellison and his father, Larry Ellison, who founded Oracle, have notable ties to Donald Trump.

Recently, David Ellison attended a UFC event at the White House. “One Battle After Another,” Penn’s previous film, was recognized as a politically resonant work and won Best Picture at the Oscars. Penn received his third Oscar for his portrayal of Col. Steven J. Lockjaw but did not attend the awards, choosing instead to visit Ukraine.
