UK Police Arrest Suspects Near US Airbase Under Explosives Act

Police in the United Kingdom have apprehended several suspects near a U.S. airbase in southwest England, specifically under offenses related to the “Explosives Act.” The arrests occurred close to RAF Fairford, a base used by the U.S. Air Force, according to Gloucestershire Police.

The police reported that properties in the Whelford area are being evacuated due to a major incident declaration. This follows the detainment of several men suspected of breaching the explosives act.

Armed police have established a cordon near the village of Whelford, close to RAF Fairford. The Army’s explosive ordnance disposal team is currently examining several vehicles as part of the investigation. Authorities have not yet released the names or the exact number of those arrested.

British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting mentioned on social media platform X that appropriate measures are being taken to address the situation.

The UK Defense Ministry stated that the Prime Minister is updated on the developments in Gloucestershire. They expressed appreciation for the quick response of the emergency services in detaining suspects and ensuring community safety. They have refrained from further comments as investigations proceed.

This incident follows a recent cyberattack by Iran-linked hackers, which affected a small British power generator, and parallels cyber incidents targeting U.S. community water systems operated by similar actors. These hackers have targeted various sectors, including water, energy, and government, causing disruptions and financial loss, though attributions remain unofficial in some cases.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has authorized the use of RAF Fairford by the U.S. for operations against Iranian missile sites, following Iranian attacks on several Gulf countries.
