Scottie Scheffler showcased resilience and determination during the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Following a challenging start, he delivered a near-perfect round with a score of 2-under 68. This result placed him at even par for the tournament, tied for 11th place. He trails leader Wyndham Clark by seven strokes as the tournament continues.
Scheffler aims to achieve the career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday if he wins on Sunday. On Friday, he ended his streak of 10 U.S. Open rounds without breaking par. At Oakmont last year, he tied for seventh, finishing at 4 over.
His performance improved after an engaging session with coach Randy Smith. Scheffler started on the 10th hole, birdying it after a par the day before. Conditions on Thursday were tough due to strong winds, but he remained steady.
Regarding the weekend setup, Scheffler expressed indifference, stating, “Doesn’t really matter to me. I just play.”
Scheffler recorded three birdies and one bogey on Friday, contrasting Thursday’s mixed result of four birdies, four bogeys, and a double bogey.
“I did a good job of keeping a pretty clean card today,” Scheffler commented, pleased with his round. He showed his signature methodical style, as seen in past victories.
During Friday’s round, he hit 12 of 14 fairways and reached 15 greens in regulation. He displayed his skill with strong drives and accurate shots.
Despite missed opportunities, Scheffler remained focused. His 17-foot birdie putt on No. 2 and a 15-footer on No. 7 narrowly missed, evoking frustration. Yet, he stayed optimistic about his efforts.
A light moment occurred when his caddie, Ted Scott, humorously remarked on a bouncing ball after a missed putt.
Scheffler’s bogey on No. 13 resulted from an approach shot landing in a bunker. He missed a 10-foot par putt. Yet, he recovered with skillful play, avoiding further mistakes.
Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler noted the challenges of Thursday’s conditions. He battled back then and continued strongly on Friday. He remained hopeful for consistent play in the coming rounds.
Scheffler often faced delays while waiting for groups ahead, maintaining focus with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich amidst fan inquiries.
