As the start of the school year approaches, many students in the Indian Prairie School District 204 will return to classrooms that have undergone significant changes. Following the approval of a 2024 referendum that allows the district to sell up to $420 million in bonds for facility upgrades, extensive renovations are in progress.
Funding and Tax Rate
The bonds are financed through an ongoing 37-cent property tax per $100 of equalized assessed value that would have expired in 2026. This means residents’ tax rates, in terms of contributions to capital projects, will remain stable.
Renovation Projects
Renovations extend across district buildings, with plans reaching up to 2032. Specific schools like Waubonsie Valley High School, Neuqua Valley High School, and Metea Valley High School are undergoing tailored renovations. District-wide projects include safety upgrades, LED lighting, and infrastructure enhancements. School security has also been prioritized, with secure entryways being installed.
Current and Future Works
This summer marks a crucial construction phase, involving significant projects at Waubonsie Valley and Neuqua Valley high schools. Some projects will be completed by the school start date, while others will continue. Waubonsie Valley is receiving stadium, cafeteria, atrium, and classroom renovations. Neuqua Valley is expanding to include new classrooms and science labs, integrating freshman students back to the main campus.
Financial Management
To date, the district has expended about $59 million since January 2025 with plans for an additional $100 million by next summer. The projects are largely on budget, allowing for accelerated work. Final bond issuances are scheduled for 2027 and 2029, with completion by 2032.
Opportunities for Students
Ongoing renovations provide educational opportunities, with student interns and classes interacting with construction teams. Viewing areas allow students to observe the ongoing work. Waubonsie and Neuqua campuses are gaining valuable construction insights during this once-in-a-generation project.
