Scottie Scheffler, the current world No. 1 golfer, is considered one of the best in the sport. However, even elite athletes face challenges. Thursday brought such a challenge for Scheffler at the Memorial Tournament.
Scheffler’s 2026 season, while not disappointing, hasn’t matched his significant achievements from 2024 and 2025. During those years, he dominated tournaments, earning victories at The Players, The Masters, the Memorial Tournament, and the Tour Championship, and clinching Olympic gold. In 2025, he continued his success with wins at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.
In 2026, Scheffler won his initial event at The American Express but experienced a string of close finishes. He placed third at the WM Phoenix Open and fourth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He narrowly missed winning The Masters, after shooting 65-68 over the weekend but finished second. A playoff loss at the RBC Heritage and a second place at the Cadillac Championship followed. He also secured a third at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
Now, Scheffler competes at the Memorial Tournament, known for its tough course, where he seeks to excel. He previously won this tournament twice consecutively and finished third in 2023 and 2021.
In the opening round, Scheffler started strong with a -2 on the front nine but struggled on the back nine. His difficulties peaked at the par 3 16th hole. After bogeys on holes 10 and 14, he faced a challenging pin on 16. Uncharacteristically, his tee shot was short, landing in the water. This resulted in a double bogey, and his frustration with caddie Ted Scott was apparent.
“I don’t know what to do. I can’t hear a word you’re saying,” he reportedly yelled at his caddie. “I feel like it was a good shot, now I’m in the water.”
He continued to express his frustration, noting how a well-hit seven iron ended up in the hazard due to incorrect wind assessment.
After his round, Scheffler explained the situation to reporters. He described hitting a solid iron shot where the wind’s sudden change threw his ball into the water. “All you can do is try to hit good shots. It’s frustrating when they don’t work out, especially like this,” he commented.
Despite the setback, Scheffler made a birdie on the par 4 17th, finishing the day with a score of +1, six shots behind the leaders. His experience reminds us that even top players face frustrations on the course.
