Scheffler Battles Health Issues During BMW Championship

Scottie Scheffler endured a week marked by health challenges while competing in the BMW Championship. His performance, which included 13 bogeys, deviated from his usual standards due to illness. Scheffler disclosed his struggle with hand, foot, and mouth disease, a condition that led to painful blisters.

“I’m sick,” Scheffler remarked, declining an interview on Thursday.

After concluding the tournament with a 2-under 68 on Sunday, Scheffler elaborated on the difficulties he faced. Blisters affected his grip, yet he pressed on, believing in his ability to overcome initial setbacks and remain competitive.

Scheffler had recently secured a decisive victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and looked promising for the PGA Tour season’s final stretch. Despite being guaranteed the top spot in the FedEx Cup through the BMW Championship, Scheffler decided against pulling out. He cited his determination, acknowledging the dual nature of his stubbornness as both a strength and a flaw. The guaranteed $23 million bonus was secured, rendering seeding irrelevant for the Tour Championship.

“I’ve never been one to pull out of a tournament, especially mid-event. That’s frustrating for me,” Scheffler admitted. “But I’m proud of my fight. I’m healing, although my throat still bothers me. My hands are better today.”

A moment of improvement with three consecutive birdies placed him briefly in the top 10. However, a bogey from the fairway bunker concluded his round. Throughout the week, he only hit 65% of greens.

“I felt better as the week progressed,” Scheffler shared. “The illness struck on Monday night, the timing was frustrating. Great golf, then the physical stress takes its toll. It impacted me throughout the week. I’m not fully recovered yet but resting should help.”
