Sarah Trone Garriott Addresses Locker Room Policy Concerns

Sarah Trone Garriott, a Democratic candidate for Congress in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, is clarifying her stance on locker room policies. She assures voters she does not support men accessing women’s locker rooms, countering claims by her opponents.

Trone Garriott, a mother of two children in Iowa public schools, emphasizes the importance of their education and safety. In a recent campaign video, she stated, “I oppose letting men in women’s locker rooms,” responding to what she considers misrepresentations by her opponent.

Her voting record as an Iowa legislator complicates her campaign efforts. Trone Garriott aims to unseat incumbent Rep. Zach Nunn in a tightly contested race. Prior to securing the Democratic nomination, Republicans highlighted parts of her record that seem further left than her current campaign suggests.

Her voting record includes opposition to two key bills. One bill, passed in 2023, prohibits schools from allowing individuals to enter bathrooms not corresponding with their biological sex. Another bill from 2022 sets sports team eligibility based on biological sex. Trone Garriott voted against these measures.

She argues previous policies aimed at restricting participants were rooted in racial and gender tensions, stating, “It’s threatening to the idea of the powerful white male figure, causing ambiguity and confusion,” at an event with the United Methodist Church.

Trone Garriott’s campaign spokesperson, Zach Schenkman, reiterated her commitment to family safety, asserting her opposition to men accessing women’s locker rooms. He added, “Sarah stands by her campaign video. Parent’s rights and children’s safety are paramount.”

Despite the clear positions in her campaign materials, critics remain skeptical. A Republican strategist described her as having a “radical record” and questioned her electability in Iowa.

Trone Garriott will contest against Nunn in the general election on November 3.
