Sara Gilio’s Rise on Oswego’s Volleyball Team

1 hour ago 0

Last season, Sara Gilio from Oswego High School navigated her sophomore year on the varsity volleyball team while managing a broken foot. Now a junior, Gilio is excelling on the court. She competes closely with her teammate and Dayton recruit, Hannah Herrick, making the Panthers a formidable team on the left side.

“Hannah has always been an inspiration to me,” Gilio said. “We’ve been playing together since childhood. Competing alongside her is amazing. I think we both add to the team’s success, which is a great opportunity for me as she’s headed to college.”

In a recent match, Gilio led both teams with seven kills and four aces, securing a 25-12, 25-12 victory over rival Oswego East in the Southwest Prairie West Conference. Herrick contributed with five kills and four aces, while Ashley Crouch led Oswego East with three kills, and Tori Vlcek added two.

Gilio has overcome significant challenges, including a foot fracture that sidelined her for a month last season. She returned just before playoffs but needed time to regain her form. “She did her best at that time,” Oswego coach Gary Mosley said. “Now, she’s in a great rhythm, with a positive mindset.”

Confidence has been key for Gilio. “Last year as a sophomore was tough, but now as a junior, I feel I truly belong here. It’s all about confidence,” Gilio explained. This shift is evident in her stats; Herrick leads with 191 kills, and Gilio follows closely with 174.

Herrick acknowledges Gilio’s progress. As a mentor, she supports Gilio by sharing experiences and provides guidance in the college recruiting process. Although Gilio is still uncommitted, she is in contact with several coaches. “Hannah is always someone I can turn to,” Gilio said. “We share the same work ethic.”

In the recent conference match on October 6, 2026, Gilio successfully challenged Oswego East’s Page Hyland, demonstrating her skilled play. Herrick enjoys her role as a mentor, helping Gilio through her journey. “Guiding her is rewarding; she’s an incredible person and leader,” Herrick said.

Gilio has improved her service game and was dominant in a recent match, serving five consecutive points, including three aces, to secure an early lead. “I love serving,” Gilio said. “It sets the play and brings excitement.”

Coach Mosley is pleased to see Gilio’s hard work paying off. “Her coachability is exceptional,” Mosley noted. “Her growth and humility are remarkable, and she continues to stay driven and assertive. It’s fantastic to watch.”

With her rising performance, Mosley believes Gilio’s potential is limitless. “Her future success depends on her determination,” Mosley said. “Many have overlooked her, but she has immense potential.”
