SAP Aims to Transform Jobs with AI, Not Eliminate Them

SAP, the well-known software company in Germany, is adopting a new strategy involving artificial intelligence (AI). The company aims to transform how jobs are performed rather than eliminate them altogether.

Located in Walldorf, Germany, SAP has been employing AI in innovative ways. Matthias Deindl, a product management executive at SAP, operates within an AI-enhanced production line. This technology has taken over many traditional tasks involved in software engineering. AI assists with brainstorming, conducting competitor research, and writing and testing code.

Despite this shift, Fabrizio Primerano, a software engineer at SAP, continues to work at the company. His role now focuses more on managing and mentoring AI agents. These agents act like personal assistants and aim to perform tasks similar to human employees. “It’s freeing me up to do more of this creative work,” Primerano said recently.

SAP executives, including Christian Klein, the chief executive, believe in embracing AI as a valuable asset. The company has historically provided back-office solutions but is now taking advantage of AI to maintain its relevance. While acknowledging AI’s ability to perform many tasks previously done by humans, SAP is encouraging employees to create new roles and tasks that are more valuable. This approach follows a major restructuring about two years ago when SAP cut nearly 10,000 jobs, with some attributed to AI’s integration.

Company officials emphasize that despite the job cuts, SAP has added over 3,500 new jobs since 2023, including positions like “forward-deployed engineers.” These employees collaborate with customers to deliver AI-driven solutions.

Christian Klein does not foresee a future where traditional coding is prominent within SAP. However, he emphasizes the evolution of the workforce, stating that the company will not have fewer employees, but rather a workforce with different skills and responsibilities.
